What is HbA1c test used for? Because red blood cells in the human body survive for 8-12 weeks before renewal, measuring glycated haemoglobin (or HbA1c) can be used to reflect average blood glucose levels over that duration, providing a useful longer-term gauge of blood glucose control. Is it necessary to fast for HbA1c test? If you have diabetes, your HbA1c level may be done every 2-6 months by your doctor or nurse. This test measures your recent average blood sugar (glucose) level. Because it is an average measurement you do NOT need to fast on the day of the test. Is HbA1c test accurate? Overall, this study shows that combining red blood cell age with HbA1c measurements could boost the accuracy of glucose testing. HbA1c is generally accurate, however, any improvements in the accuracy of the test could have advantages, particularly towards identifying new cases of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.
